Spring Forward March 9 – and Advance to Better Safety

Daylight saving time begins on Sunday, March 9. In anticipation, the American Public Health Association (APHA) is launching a campaign to encourage people to check their emergency preparedness kits at the same time they change their clocks. The goal is to make preparing for a possible public health emergency when ‘springing forward’ as familiar as checking smoke detector batteries when "falling back."

The National Safety Council urges you to join this effort. Click here for a downloadable toolkit from the APHA that provides tips for building your emergency preparedness kit and why preparing for a public health emergency is important.

Be Prepared - Learn CPR

Are you a parent, baby sitter or someone else who works with children? If so, getting trained in CPR and AED may prepare you to save a child’s life. You would be considered a “first responder” following a life threatening-incident: someone who’s with the child in the critical window of time after the incident but before the ambulance arrives. Your knowledge of CPR and AED can dramatically increase the child’s chances of recovery. The National Safety Council urges you to get – and stay – trained in these life-saving techniques.

With CPR Teddy, practice makes perfect. Learn more...

Another Campus Shooting Prompts CDC Response

The recent killings at Northern Illinois University in DeKalb were the fifth fatal shooting incident at a U.S. college or university in the past six months, according to the Associated Press.

In response to this latest incident, the National Center for Injury Prevention and Control’s Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has posted the following information on school violence, including mental health information for students, parents and school personnel. The National Safety Council supports the CDC’s reminder of the importance of emergency preparedness and response.
