OSHA's Whistleblower Protection Program is in need of improved oversight and data, according to a recent Government Accountability Office review.

The program is responsible for investigating the complaints of workers who risk employer reprisals for calling attention to prohibited practices. In its study (.pdf file), GAO found OSHA lacks:

  • An effective mechanism to ensure data from complaints is accurately recorded
  • Mechanisms to ensure the quality and consistency of investigations
  • Certain resources such as equipment, training and legal assistance

GAO provided eight recommendations to the Department of Labor on ways to improve the program, including a new system to track whistleblower complaints and establishing minimum equipment standards for investigators.
