At press time, Nicole R. Nason, who has headed the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration since May 2006, was said to be leaving her post in August. Nason reportedly informed Department of Transportation officials of her intentions July 15. During her tenure, Nason, 37, has been credited with pushing initiatives to increase gas mileage rules, requiring automakers to install electronic stability control on all new vehicles by the 2012 model year, and spearheading rules to provide head protection in side-impact crashes. DOT officials have not announced a replacement for Nason. James F. Ports Jr. is NHTSA deputy administrator. | ||||||
