A British university is beginning a two-and-a-half-year research study into how a business's organization and culture impacts worker health and well-being.

According to the University of Nottingham, more than 500,000 people in Britain reported becoming ill in 2006 and 2007 because of work-related stress. The study, which will examine 40 companies of various sizes, hopes to have an impact on the theories, knowledge and practice of how people manage work-related health.

"Few studies have considered what impact organizational factors such as culture, leadership, policies, strategies, change and development goals can have" on job satisfaction, absence and productivity, researcher Maria Karanika-Murray said in a statement. "The importance of this study lies in its implications for the successful and sustainable management of work-related health."
