Highway safety organizations lack research data to identify the scope of safety issues related to snow and ice accumulation on motor carrier vehicles, according to a study (.pdf file) released by the American Transportation Research Institute.

Researchers with ATRI – the research arm of the Arlington, VA-based American Trucking Associations – conducted a review of research and regulatory actions related to safety problems with snow and ice accumulation on the tops of vehicles. They said that despite also conducting stakeholder interviews and surveys, they found little to no data to identify the scope of the safety problem.

Study results were released Dec. 23 and include recommendations for conducting a feasibility study on snow removal devices and implementing public outreach and education campaigns.
