AAP issues policy on keeping child pedestrians safe
The American Academy of Pediatrics this week released a policy statement intended to help reduce the number of child pedestrian injuries.
According to statistics from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, approximately 900 pedestrians younger than 19 are killed each year, and an additional 51,000 receive nonfatal injuries. Although the rate of pedestrian deaths is highest among adults, the rate of nonfatal injuries is highest among children ages 10-19.
To help counteract these injuries, Elk Grove Village, IL-based AAP recommends parents stay informed about the cognitive and behavioral abilities that reduce a child's ability to safely navigate traffic, as well as the dangers of backover injuries to children playing in driveways.
