Eye Protection

Can lens cleaners with silicone harm anti-reflective or hard coatings on safety eyewear?

Why do I have to wear eye protection under a face shield with an ANSI Z87.1 rating?

Eye Wash

How do I know how many emergency showers and eyewashes I need for my facility, and where to locate them? Are there any established volume requirements?

Is there a definitive way to determine whether a specific application requires an eyewash versus an eye/face wash? How can I determine the specific features I need?

How do Americans with Disabilities Act accessibility requirements apply to emergency showers and eyewashes?

What factors need to be considered in selecting an emergency eyewash station?

ANSI Z358.1-2004 requires that flushing fluid dispensed from emergency drench showers must be between 60° F and less than 100° F, at a 20-gallon-per-minute flow rate, for the full 15-minute drench cycle. Does that requirement change in the event of a multiple-victim accident requiring simultaneous use of multiple showers in the same vicinity? If not, how can a specifier best ensure compliance at each shower outlet?

Why is tepid water required for emergency eyewashes and showers, and what are some ways to supply it?

Fall Protection

Why do the labels on my fall protection equipment need to be legible to pass inspection?

OSHA standards refer to a 310-pound capacity limit on fall arrest products. What does this mean, and how does a person who weighs more than 310 pounds work safely at height?

In hot weather, wearing a harness can become uncomfortable. Are there ways a worker can alter his or her harness to become less restrictive and increase breathability? Are there other measures that can be taken to avoid heat stress?

The fall protection I currently own meets the old ANSI Z359.1-1992 (R1999). Will it be compatible with new fall protection equipment that meets the updated ANSI Z359-2007 fall protection code?

First Aid/AEDs

Our company is looking into buying an automated external defibrillator. What's the difference between "escalating energy" and "non-escalating energy"?

If I purchase an AED for my facility, is that enough to reduce liability and make my employees feel safe?

We work to ensure our employees are ready for an emergency by providing regular training and refresher courses. What is the best way to incorporate automated external defibrillators into an overall training regimen?

Hand Protection

How long can I store natural latex and synthetic gloves, and still be assured they will provide maximum performance? Are there any specific guidelines for glove storage?

Some of our workers seem to have allergies to the gloves they are wearing. They are using either latex or vinyl disposable gloves. What is causing these problems and how can they be prevented?

Many of the tasks outlined in NFPA 70E table 130.7(9)(a) require my workers to wear rubber insulated gloves to perform a task. Why are insulated or insulating hand tools also required for the same task?

What is the difference between cut resistance and cut protection, and how do I select the right protective glove for my application?

Why is it important to use gloves with an ergonomic design? What features should workers look for in ergonomically designed hand protection products?

Hazard Communication

I’ve been hearing about control banding and hazard communication. What is control banding, and will it be introduced into the United States anytime soon?

With the increase in workers speaking English as a second language, are there any OSHA standards for requiring signage in various languages?

We do not always purchase specific chemicals such as acetone, xylene, etc., from the same manufacturer or supplier, and each manufacturer supplies a Material Safety Data Sheet for its chemicals. Is it necessary to keep copies of all MSDSs from each company, or will one complete MSDS suffice for routine purposes, emergency situations or both?

How will GHS and REACH impact my MSDS management program?

Hearing Protection

How are hearing protection devices tested?

Is there an alternative to using personal noise dosimeters for determining risk of hearing loss? Our production facility is based on an assembly line layout, and most of our workers perform only one or two operations in one place all day. The noise levels are steady and it seems that hanging a noise dosimeter on each worker for a full shift is overkill. However, we need to be compliant and we want to get the best exposure data possible.

Noise-exposed workers in our facility are required to wear hearing protectors. The noise reduction ratings on the box tell us how much protection most people obtain in laboratory testing, but how can we determine if the earplugs are offering adequate protection in real-world usage?

Heat Stress

I know that when it's hot I need to drink enough water to avoid heat stress, but how much is enough? Is there a ratio between how hot it is and how much water you drink?

Incentives

I'd like to use gift cards as incentives for our safety program. How do I decide which cards will benefit my employees the most, and what level of budget I'll need to cover them?

I've inherited a safety incentive program that rewards people for lagging indicators and I'm worried that workers may be hiding injuries. How can I shift to a behavior-based program?

Instruments & Monitors

Where is the best place to position a gas monitor in confined spaces?

More and more confined space entry monitors are being offered with VOC detectors. What can they detect and why are they needed?

How often should gas monitoring instruments be tested and calibrated?

Is it true that "heavy" gases sink to the floor?

How often should I calibrate my gas monitor?

When choosing a confined space monitor, how important is the sample drawing pump?

Lockout/Tagout, Machine Guarding

How do I make sure I have the right padlock for lockout/tagout purposes?

In which situations is minor servicing of equipment allowed without requiring a specific energy control procedure?

We have a large work cell area that contains several machine operations that run automatically. What is the best way to guard such an area?

Personal Protective Equipment

Can I apply stickers to my hard hat?

As a smaller organization, how can we implement an electrical safe-work practices program?

Plant Safety

How can a company decrease dock worker injuries quickly?

Protective Clothing

OSHA currently is revising the 1910.269 Electric Power Generation, Transmission and Distribution standard. What are some of the proposed changes and how could it affect my protective clothing program?

I heard some people are selling counterfeit reflective garments that aren't ANSI/ISEA 107-2004 compliant. What makes a garment compliant?

What workwear will help to protect my workers from ultraviolet radiation and heat stress while working outdoors or in a hot environment?

I know a safety director from another worksite who wants to allow any flame-resistant fabric that passes the industry standards ASTM F1506 for arc and NFPA 2112 for flash fire. This does not seem wise to me; is it?

Respiratory Protection

Workers in our manufacturing facility will soon start using full-face respirators instead of half-face respirators. Can we continue fit testing with the same qualitative fit test method we have been using for the last few years, which was Saccharin?

What are the steps for NIOSH to approve a particulate filtering facepiece respirator?

What is the best way to get employees to comply with the requirements of a comprehensive respiratory protection program?

Safety Software

How can I guard against underreporting safety statistics at my organization?

Our company wants to upgrade our safety program with computer software but we are skeptical about the return on investment of computerizing management safety functions. Are there realistic benefits to be gained from computerizing our safety program?

Over the past few years, automation has become an important aspect of complying with codes and regulations. However, the task of collecting and managing the information is taking time and resources away from assessment activities and decision-making. Can handheld devices be used to collect the required information electronically?

Skin Protection

My job requires a lot of work outdoors in the sun. If I apply an SPF 30 sunscreen, how well-protected from skin cancer will I be?

Training

In the past, we have conducted the hands-on component of our annual OSHA fire extinguisher training by lighting a fire in our parking lot and having our employees use dry-chemical extinguishers to extinguish it. Due to dry conditions, we've been under a fire ban for several months. How can I conduct the hands-on component of the training with a fire ban in place?

What are the components of a comprehensive fire extinguisher training program? Environmental liabilities prevent me from discharging dry chemical during fire extinguisher training. What are the alternatives for training?

We have had front-line employees doing safety observations for several years with good results. Now we want to get supervisors more involved, but are afraid of undermining our success with hourly workers. What kinds of activities should we focus on?
