Hey Texas Members - Just How Good is Your Safety Program?
To help companies find the strengths and weaknesses of their safety programs, the National Safety Council offers a series of standardized safety surveys. These surveys collect feedback about the quality of the company’s safety program directly from the employees. Surveys of this type provide a leading indicator of safety program improvement. The benefits of using surveys -
■ The surveys give a more accurate and timely indicator of safety program quality than other safety metrics.
■ They sort strengths and weaknesses and automatically create a prioritized action plan for improvement.
■ They add to company employee involvement initiatives.
■ They set a baseline against which to measure future improvement.
■ They are relatively straightforward and non-intrusive compared with other measurement tools and interventions.
■ Employees generally recognize the name of the National Safety Council and trust it as neutral intermediary.

Texas Members …NSC is on YouTube & Facebook
The NSC recently created a YouTube channel - www.youtube.com/user/NatlSafetyCouncil . The channel currently houses two videos: “Support Safety” and “Death by Cell Phone.” Since posting “Death by Cell Phone” on May 5, we have received more than 10,000 views.
Please help us get the word out on distracted driving by promoting this channel and the “Death by Cell Phone” video. Both videos are to be shared with everyone. The channel provides a method for downloading the native video file in case there are companies that want to share it with their employees.
NSC on Facebook
The NSC now has a presence on Facebook. To join our group, please search National Safety Council and become a “fan.”
The Facebook account has been used to promote our Claritin Clear to Drive Pledge and YouTube channel, and to remind people not to text or talk on a cell phone while driving.
Steering Friends Right - Facebook
This teen-driven, public awareness campaign provides an outlet for teens to speak up on teen driving safety. Teens can upload videos and photos to share with other teens on safe driving. They can share their personal stories, encourage others to drive safely and help us lobby for GDL legislation.

We all know that today's economic climate is most challenging as we face the many day-to-day safety and health concerns before us. It is in these uncertain times that we need to pay close attention to making safety an integral operating element in and off the work-site.
Remember, your Texas Chapter is your partner who supports your need in making effective and productive safety conscious decisions affecting your workforce.
If you have any questions and/or concerns, or a need to discuss any of our products or services, or you would just like us to stop-by and visit your operation, please do not hesitate to call upon us.
Your NSC - A More Defined Role!!
Our new "mission statement" reflects your Council's diversity on how it daily serves the safety and health demands of our ever-changing world. It states - "The National Safety Council saves lives by preventing injuries and deaths at work, in homes, communities and on the roads through leadership, research, education and advocacy."
Our "Vision" has more clarity of purpose and accountability - to save 10,000 lives and prevent 1,000,000 injuries over the next five years.
It is good for all of us to remember here in Texas of our commitment and challenge to "make a difference" and thereby making this world a "safer place" to live and work.
"Safety Ambassador" - A Call to Action for all Texans
This past September, the National Safety Council debuted its "Safety Ambassador" program - a grassroots effort to involve individuals as safety educators in their own communities - at its 96th annual Congress & Expo in Anaheim, California. The Safety Ambassador program provides volunteers with the tools they need to help friends, neighbors, co-workers and other associates learn more about the leading causes of accidental death and injury and how to keep them stay safe. Its an outreach program focusing on motor vehicle safety, falls prevention, unintentional drug overdose, and overexertion. Whether directly, or indirectly, each of us has been touched by these issues. Yet, the injuries and deaths caused in these areas are preventable.
Change can happen, but the Council cant do it alone. Your Texas Chapter needs your help. Please talk to your local businesses, your friends, and your family. We need you to help them understand how they can stay safe behind the wheel, in your community, and while at home. And, were giving you the materials you need to be successful. Our Safety Ambassador kit enables anyone to advocate for safety. The program contains everything you need - posters, tip sheets, and presentations. These materials are for you to use and share. By going to its website - www.safetyambassador.nsc.org - you can download the kit or request the CD when you register to participate. Participating is easy. This is a free program with no requirements. It really is just about making the world safer.
